The Kenya Sugar Research and Training Institute (KESRETI) is a newly established body, focused on advancing research, innovation, and technology transfer within the Kenyan sugar industry. It is mandated to conduct research, develop technologies, and improve training standards to boost the sector’s competitiveness.

About Us​

The Kenya Sugar Research and Training Institute (KSRTI) was established under the Sugar Act No. 11 of 2024 to spearhead research, innovation, and capacity building in the sugar sector. The Institute took over sugar research functions previously managed by the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO)

Core Functions of KESRETI

1. Research and Development

Promote, coordinate, and regulate research in sugarcane, sugar crops, by-products, and related technologies.
Expedite equitable access to research information, resources, sugar technologies, and innovations, and promote the application of research findings in industry development.
Breed and promote sugarcane varieties suited for various agro-ecological zones of Kenya.
Conduct research on nutritional requirements, pest and disease management, agronomic practices, and environmental sustainability for sugar crops.

Our Services

The Kenya Sugar Research and Training Institute (KESRTI) offers various services aimed at enhancing the sugar industry in Kenya. These include research on sugarcane varieties, seed multiplication and distribution, and extension services for farmers. KESRTI also plays a role in developing quality planting materials and promoting contract farming through a central database.
