Formulate policies and make policy recommendations on sugar research, development, and training aligned with the national sugar policy.

Determine and advise the Kenya Sugar Board on resource requirements for sugar research at national and county levels.

Regulate, monitor, and ensure that all sugar research conducted by other institutions or persons aligns with national priorities.

Formulate or approve medium- and long-term research plans, strategies, and budgets for the institute.

Provide grants to institutions or individuals for research and training programs consistent with national research priorities.

Support and promote training and capacity building related to sugar industry research.

Liaise with and coordinate institutions, agencies, and persons involved in sugar research.

Establish platforms for sharing research information and advancing sugar industry research.

Conduct research on sugarcane breeding, crop nutrition, pest and disease management, agronomic practices, and technology appraisal to improve sugar production efficiency and sustainability.

Promote technology transfer through training, extension services, and dissemination of research findings.
